Why Discipline Isn’t the Answer to Your Weight Struggles
If you’ve ever told yourself, “I just need more discipline,” you’re not alone.
So many people feel stuck in a cycle of trying harder, pushing more, and tightening control especially when it comes to food, weight, and health. We believe if we could just be more consistent, more motivated, or more disciplined, everything would finally fall into place.
But what if discipline and willpower aren’t the problem at all?
The Real Issue Isn’t Willpower
Most people don’t fail because they’re lazy or unmotivated. They struggle because they’re trying to build change on top of shame, guilt, and unrealistic expectations.
Lasting change doesn’t come from force. It comes from understanding.
When we slow down enough to get curious about our habits, our thoughts, and our patterns, we begin to see what’s really going on. We move from:
“Why can’t I just stick with this?”
to“What’s happening here and what do I actually need?”
That shift is powerful.
A Better Way: Compassion Over Control
One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve learned, and one that I teach my own clients, is that you don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to be “on track” 100% of the time. In fact, I discourage people from striving for the A and instead encourage them to work toward the B. Achieving the B consistently will net much bigger returns than only earning the A occasionally.
Long term success is achieved when we have a foundation built on:
Consistency over intensity
Curiosity over judgment
Progress over perfection
And most importantly: self-compassion.
You don’t change by being harder on yourself. You change by creating safety, structure, and trust with yourself.
